Differences between NBMA - Broadcast - Point-to-Point Network Architecture types

In this article will demonstrate on the differences between the network architecture types. There are three network architecture types:
  • Point-to-Point Network
  • Broadcast Network
  • NBMA (Non-Broadcast Multi Access) Network

Point-to-Point network: A network that joins a single pair of routers, such as connecting two routers to each other using serial link.

Broadcast Network: is a multi-access broadcast network, such as Ethernet. Multi access means numerous network devices such as hosts, printers, and routers can access the same media or multiple devices are members of the same network media, this network has a capability of broadcast such as Ethernet switched network as illustrated in the diagram below.

NBMA Network:  A network that interconnects more than two routers but that has no broadcast capability. Frame Relay, ATM, and X.25 are examples of NBMA networks.

Network Traffic Types - Unicast Broadcast Multicast Anycast - Transmission Types

In this article will demonstrate on the differences between the network traffic types and when they can be used. There are four network traffic types or transmission types: unicast, multicast, broadcast, and anycast.
Unicast: sending the packet from single source device to single destination device(one-to-one). For example  the client with an ip address 192.168.10.2 wants to ping to a single destination address 192.168.10.3, this is called unicast transmission.
broadcast: sending the packet from one device to all devices. Broadcasts are used in IPv4 networks, but not in IPv6 networks. There are two types of broadcast, limited and directed.
Limited broadcast: in limited broadcast, the broadcast address 255.255.255.255 is used as a destination address, the broadcast packet will be sent to all devices in the network segment, but this type of broadcast cannot be forwarded by the routers to another subnet. for example this type of broadcast is used in arp. the figure below illustrates an example of broadcast transmission.
Broadcast transmission example using broadcast address

Directed broadcast or Subnet Broadcast: in directed broadcast, if you have a network 192.168.10.0/24, the broadcast address of this network is 192.168.10.255. The sender of the broadcast packet will use the broadcast address 192.168.10.255 as a destination address. So, this broadcast packet will be sent to all devices in the subnet 192.168.10.0/24. Also, this type of broadcast transmission can be forwarded by the routers, so, if the sender of the broadcast packet is from a network different than the destination network, this packet broadcast transmission will be sent to the router that is directly connected to the destination, and this router will forward this broadcast to the destination network if the ip directed-broadcast feature is enabled on the router. For example, this type of broadcast can be used if you send WOL (Wake-On-Lan) broadcast packets from different network to certain destination network.
Multicast: traffic travels from a single host to multiple hosts not all hosts. What makes this possible in IPv4 networks is the use of a Class D address. A Class D address, such as 239.1.2.3, represents the address of a multicast group. Look at the diagram below, the video server
could, in this example, send a single copy of each video stream packet destined for
239.1.2.3. Devices wanting to receive the video stream can join the multicast group. In IPv6 networks, multicast addresses have a prefix of ff00::/8.
multicast transmission - multicast address example

Anycast: is used in ipv6 only. when using  anycast, a single IPv6 address is assigned to multiple devices, and when sending a packet to that address, the packet will be sent to one the nearest device - means it will be sent to one of these devices that have the same ipv6 address. The nearest device is determined by the router routing table. Look at the diagram below, a client with an IPv6 address of 2100::1 wants to send traffic to a destination IPv6 address of 2200::1. Notice that two servers (Server A and Server B) have an IPv6 address of 2200::1, the traffic destined for 2200::1 is sent to Server A through Router R2, because the network on which Server A resides appears to be closer than the network on which Server B resides, from the perspective of Router R1’s IPv6 routing table (the closer is determined based on the metric or the cost value).
Anycast ipv6 transmission type

Difference Between Network and Internetwork / Network Types LAN MAN WAN

In this article will demonstrate on the difference between the network and internetwork, also will show the network types.
What is the network (Network Definition): is two network devices or more connected to each other via a link, this link can be wired, wireless or any other media. Network devices can be switches, computers, ip printers, ...

Network can be categorized based on the geographical area:
LAN(Local Area netwok):nework devices are close together, so all network devices will be in the same building.
MAN(Metropolitan Area Network): covers larger geographical area than LAN such as town or city.
WAN(Wide Area Network):   exists over a large scaled geographical area such as country or continent.

network internetwork lan man wan definitions and meaning

Now, let's explain what is the internetwork ?
Internetwork connects to LANs ow WANs to each other via a router as illustrated in the above diagram. So, when you find routers that connect networks together, this is called internetwork.

The first figure above represents the network , but the second figure that contains the routers represents the internetwork.

Configure / Assign IP address to Cisco Layer 3 Switch Interfaces

In this article will demonstrate on how to assign an ip address to cisco layer 3 switch.
By default, all interface on the cisco layer 3 switch are physical layer 2 ports and belong to vlan 1 untill you convert these interfaces to physical layer 3 port by using no switchport command.
So, you couldn't assign an ip address to cisco layer 3 interfaces unless you convert them to layer 3 port by using no switchport command, as you see below
London(config)#int gigabitEthernet 1/0/46
London(config-if)#no switchport
London(config-if)#ip address 192.168.10.1 255.255.255.0

To do so and for more details, watch this simple and short video on youtube

How To SSH From Cisco Network Device Router or Switch to Another

In this article will demonstrate on how to ssh from cisco router or switch to another network device.
Sometimes, you want to ssh cisco router or switch as fast as possible rather than using program such as putty that enable us to ssh the network devices. For example, if you want to ssh a cisco router that has an ip address 10.12.0.244 from the cisco router that has an ip address 10.12.0.1, you should follow this formula.
Router#ssh -l user-name ip-address
Router#ssh -l tariq 10.12.0.244

and then will prompt you to type the password of the username that was configured on the router (10.12.0.244), as shown in the short and simple video below

Configure / Assign Static IP address to Cisco Layer 2 Switch or VLAN interface

Assign ip address to switch or assign ip address to vlan
In this article will demonstrate on how to assign an ip address statically to cisco layer 2 switch.
You can assign ip address to a cisco layer 2 switch by using the virtual interfaces  (VLAN interfaces) not physical interfaces, by configuring ip address to the vlan interface as shown in the following commands and video.
London(config)#int vlan 1
London(config-if)#ip address 192.168.10.10 255.255.255.0
London(config-if)#no shutdown

Configure / Assign Static IP address to Cisco Layer 2 Switch or VLAN interface

Looking at the above diagram, we assigned ip address 192.168.10.10 to the cisco switch0, after that Router0 that has ip address 192.168.10.1 can ping to the cisco switch.

Router0#ping 192.168.10.10
