Configure cisco router as NTP client

In previous article, we demonstrate how to configure the router to act as ntp server, the following link is for the previous article that demonstrates configuring cisco router as ntp server.

If the ntp Server ip address :192.168.1.20, the following command should be assigned on the router to work as ntp client
R2(confg)#ntp server 192.168.1.20

To ensure that your configuration is correctly configured
R2#sh ntp associations
address ref clock st when poll reach delay offset disp
~192.168.1.20 .LOCL. 1 749 1024 377 35.9 154743 18.6
* master (synced), # master (unsynced), + selected, - candidate, ~ configured

To ensure that the time is synchronized from the ntp server, type the following command

R2#sh ntp status

Clock is synchronized, stratum 2, reference is 192.168.1.20

nominal freq is 250.0000 Hz, actual freq is 250.0000 Hz, precision is 2**18

reference time is E068503D.E5BF4153 (14:37:49.897 UTC Mon Apr 22 2019)

clock offset is 0.7429 msec, root delay is 12.12 msec

root dispersion is 890.11 msec, peer dispersion is 889.34 msec

Note that the NTP client may will take few minutes to be synchronized with the ntp server.

Cisco Router as NTP Server / Configure NTP on Cisco routers

In this article will demonstrate on how to configure cisco router to act as ntp server. One command is essential and the others are optional, the essential one is the following:
R1(config)#ntp master 1
1 is the stratum number. it can be assigned from 1 to 15.
One of the optional commands:
R1(config)#ntp source gig0/0
The above command means the router will distribute the time to the ntp clients via the interface gig0/0.

NTP Server on Call Manager publisher mode is inaccessible / NTP unsynchronised in cucm

CUCM Doesn't support windows ntp servers, also you shouldn't use a public ntp server that you can't control it. It does support linux or IOS ntp server.

Sometimes, when you install IM and Presence you define the cucm publisher node ip address, and gives you this error message:

when you open cucm you will see that the ntp servers are accessible but unsynchronised, as shown in the following picture

Solution:

Use an internal router to be ntp server, the configuration of the router is very easy -it's one command.

R(config)#ntp master 1

Add the ntp server ip address which is your router ip address to your cucm, using the following command

admin:util ntp server add 192.168.1.20

make sure that the ntp service is started and running using the following command

admin:util ntp status

If it's stopped, u can start it using the following command

admin:util ntp start

The result will be as the following picture
