How to add Linux host on EVE-NG

This article will demonstrate on how to add linux machine to EVE-NG, use the following steps:

1-Download the linux image, in this lab centos 7 desktop image is used, the link below contains different distribution images.

2-Copy the linux image linux-CentOS-7-Desktop.tar.gz to the following path in eve /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/ using any program such as winscp or filezilla

3-Navigate to the path that contain the image /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/ on eve
root@eve-ng:~# cd /opt/unetlab/addons/qemu/
In this example the path contains more than image included linux-CentOS-7-Desktop.tar.gz
root@eve-ng:/opt/unetlab/addons/qemu# ls -l
total 1806264
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 24 22:21 asa-9.1.5
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Aug 23 20:38 fortinet-FGT-v5-build1484
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1849599732 Sep 1 08:17 linux-CentOS-7-Desktop.tar.gz

4-Extract the linux image
root@eve-ng:/opt/unetlab/addons/qemu# tar xzvf linux-CentOS-7-Desktop.tar.gz

5-Remove the compressed file linux-CentOS-7-Desktop.tar.gz
root@eve-ng:/opt/unetlab/addons/qemu# rm -f linux-CentOS-7-Desktop.tar.gz

6-Fix Permission
root@eve-ng:/opt/unetlab/addons/qemu# /opt/unetlab/wrappers/unl_wrapper -a fixpermissions

Note: when you add the linux node on the eve. Right click on the node and choose edit before you start the machine and make sure you are using the following recommended settings:

7- Start the linux host using the username:user and password:Test123 and Enjoy!!

How to upgrade my EVE - Update EVE-NG

Just run these 3 commands to upgrade eve system:
apt autoremove
apt update
apt upgrade

It's important to reboot your EVE Vm after upgrading the system and clear your browsing cache. The following video show you how shutdown ur EVE VM safely without crashing the system:

How to backup your labs in EVE-ng / EVE backup contents

To backup EVE content copy following folders to your local machine:
/opt/unetlab/addons/

/opt/unetlab/tmp/

/opt/unetlab/labs/

If your eve machine crashed, install the eve again and copy the above contents to the new eve again, and enjoy using EVE-ng.

If you had created own templates in EVE-PRO then backup data below as well.

/opt/unetlab/html/templates/

How to Configure Cisco router as DNS Server

Steps below clarify how to configure your cisco router to work as a dns server.

1-Enable DNS Service on the router
R(config)#ip dns server

2-Enable domain-lookup on the router, to be able to resolve name to ip address by lookup the host table that contains list of ip address and corresponding names.
R(config)#ip domain-lookup

3-Specify the public name servers. When the local client request to solve a name that doesn't exist in the local host table of the router, the router will forward the request to the public dns servers. you can specify more than one name server because if one fails, the ther will take over.
R(config)#ip name-server 8.8.8.8
R(config)#ip name-server 1.1.1.1

4-configure the router with hostname of the local clients and their corresponding ip addresses.
R(config)#ip host john 192.168.1.5
R(config)#ip host john 192.168.1.6

5-Enjoy resloving . If you ping Sara, the router will resolve the name Sara to the ip 192.1681.6 and sara pc will reply.
